Ponniyin Selvan: I and Ponniyin Selvan: II are two epic historical action adventure movies in Tamil that were written by Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan and directed by Mani Ratnam. They are the film versions of Ponniyin Selvan, a 1955 book by Kalki Krishnamurthy, which Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah produced through Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.
Since its publication, a number of Tamil filmmakers have considered making a movie based on the book Ponniyin Selvan, including an attempt by M. G. Ramachandran in the late 1950s; however, nothing ever came of it. Ratnam made an attempt to adapt the book decades later, in the late 1980s and early 2010s, but was unable to do so because of a lack of funding.
After Lyca agreed to fund the movie, Ratnam announced that it was his "dream
project" and resurrected the project in January 2019. Ponniyin Selvan's
production halted twice because of the COVID-19 pandemic between 11 December
2019 and 18 September 2021 after a number of cast and crew changes. It was
supposed to be a single film, but it was divided into two. Both parts were
shot concurrently in several locations throughout India, with a few
sequences also being shot in Thailand.
