B. S. Ranga directed and produced the 1959 Indian Kannada film Mahishasura
Mardini (lit. 'Slayer of Mahishasura'; a name for Durga). Rajkumar, V.
Nagayya, Udaykumar, and Narasimharaju star in the film. It was dubbed in seven
other languages and is regarded as one of the first major Pan-India films.
G. K. Venkatesh composed the score for the film. It was dubbed in seven
languages, including Telugu and Hindi as Durga Maata (lit. 'Mother Durga,'
1960). This was the first film made at Madras' Vikram Studios. Rajkumar sang a
duet as a playback singer for the first time in this film with the song
Thumbithu Manava.
